The Black Rabbit Restaurant, Arundel, West Sussex, England

The Black Rabbit Restaurant
This restaurant is set on the banks of the River Arun with magnificent views of Arundel Castle. It's a beautiful place to dine anytime of the year. I've been in the summer and the winter and loved both times. In winter there's the fireplace ambiance and in the summer the lovely outside seating area on the riverbank.

Along the river

It was a couple of years ago that I went in the summertime and the food was nice rather than spectacular, except for my sticky toffee pudding which was SUPERP. I am not a dessert person so for me to say this is really saying something. I was on a sugar high for days after eating it!

My sticky toffee pudding
Wendy and Peter deciding what to order

On both occasions I went with my wonderful aunt and uncle, Wendy and Peter, and we always have a good time no matter where we go or what we do. We went at the beginning of April and although the weather was great (eat your heart out cold and wet Europe), we sat inside as it got colder in the evening. It's cozily decorated on the inside and I enjoyed sitting inside just as much as outside.

Fish platter

I had the fish platter which I thought would be fish cooked in various ways, but it was all fried – great if you like fried food, less great if you don't. But it was all fresh and tasty. They even serve the chips with a curry sauce like up-north! And least we forget, mushy peas.

Liver and onions

Wendles had liver and onions which was fine and Peter a Cornish pasty which was also fine. We were all happy with our meals and the beer and service were both very good. They are well known for their beer and it is really good. Apparently they have been brewing and serving food for 235 years!

Cornish pasty

I know I'm repeating myself, but I just wanted to say (again) that the food is good rather than great. I DO recommend having a meal here, but don't expect to get something out of the ordinary. It's good home cooking so go on, give it a try!

PS: There's a lovely lake (with ducks and swans) and walking paths through the beautiful countryside. Arundel Castle has apparently been done up and is well worth visiting I've been told. Will visit next time I'm over and let you know.
