Swellendam and Jansehuis cottage

Jansehuis Swellendam
I think this is one of the most beautiful places ever. South Africa is in the grips of a massive drought, but the Swellendam area has been spared and is lush and green. And this cottage is just a dream come true.

Jansehuis Swellendam
It is completely self-sufficient with solar power for lights and fridge, gas for hot water and cooking and an outside compost toilet with the best views imaginable. A poo with a view, if you’ll excuse my language, but it rhymes so beautifully!

The cottage is on an organic farm and we were greeted by lovely Spanish wwoofers (People who work on organic farms) and shown our little home. It is away from everything and everyone, but you still have the pleasurable company of their three adorable doggies. One of them had the colouring and length of a big hunting dog and the legs of a corgi…just too sweet for words!

The cottage has views across the mountains and we sat outside feasting our eyes on the beautiful surroundings. We had a braai (barbecue for those who don’t already know) right off the back terrace and sat out till late at night watching the stars. A little piece of heaven.

In the morning, a herd of pretty cows passed by gazing at us in surprise. Or was it because Joerg was having a shower in the open-air shower? We found having the shower and the loo outside a great feature. All the grey water from the house goes to watering the banana trees – everything is just so well though through.

We loved the cottage and would, as in many places we stayed at, have loved to stay longer, but alas someone else had booked the lovely place so we had a last gaze across the hills and headed off to our next adventure.
