Nectarines with Honey and Strawberry Cobbles/Biscuits

Nectarines and cobbles
I’ve been cooking up a storm the last month or two, but have not gotten around to telling you about it. But today’s the day!! I made this for the wonderful Tante Inge and Onkel Günter last week and they loved it and asked for the recipe – always a good sign. They drove 4 hours to come and celebrate Karl’s 84th birthday (my father-in-law) – thanks for coming!

Ostrich egg scrambled eggs

Ostrich egg
To make scrambled eggs with an ostrich egg, you have to break an ostrich egg and this is quite a process, especially if you want to keep the egg shell whole. But where there’s a (wifely) will there’s a (husbandly) way, and so I have my whole egg to craft with!

Wild about Asparagus

Anjas pancakes
TODAY'S RECIPE: Asparagus Pancakes

I can hear the circling helicopters in the distance, dogs yapping and people calling my name, but I can't stop. I just have to keep checking yet another bush for another spear of asparagus. Just one more. Then another one and another one. The search and rescue people asked me to tell them approximately where I would be looking tomorrow so that they could find me more easily, but I won't be fooled. They just want to get to MY asparagus before I do...

15 On Orange Hotel

Concierge level of the hotel.
15 on Orange is a brand new 5 Star hotel in Cape Town city center (corner of Grey’s Pass and Orange Street) and we had breakfast there with the General Manager’s fiancé – what can I say…we know people. People who can get you an awesome breakfast. Entrée the beautiful, friendly, slightly crazy and divine, Cecile.

Girls day out vs. Ladies luncheon

Today’s recipe is: Sweet corn chilli flan
A photo of a Sweet corn chili flan.

A friend recently told me that she went to a Ladies Luncheon (as opposed to a Girls Day Out). I have never actually been invited to a Ladies Luncheon. There could be several reasons for this, but I think it’s possibly because I’m not a lady. And it’s not that I haven’t tried. I put on high heels, nice dresses buttoned most of the way to the top and sip demurely on a cold glass of white wine. That’s the first 10 minutes. Then I’m knocking back whatever drinks are passing my way, my dress is unbuttoned most of the way to the bottom and I’m telling rude jokes. This will not do at a Ladies Luncheon, but a Girls Day Out is something different. Yes, we too have lunch in a feeding frenzy type of a way, but there are many differences so I will give a short list of the major ones.

Breakfast at the market

Today's recipe is: Spicy Sausage on French Bread
Everybody loves French markets and we are no exception to this rule. In fact, I am no longer merely an enjoyer, I am a believer of this tradition. This belief may involve ruining my liver and lead to early alcoholism and an early death, but if this is the price to be paid to preserve the French traditional way of life, then I shall have to sacrifice myself.

Husbands and other Smoothies

Today's recipes are: Joerg's Breakfast Smoothie; and a Mango Smoothie
My husband has just asked me for a bowl and a pair of scissors. To some of you this may seem like a perfectly normal request, but I am married to The World’s Biggest 5 Year Old. So this question sets off the same alarm bells that sound when a 5year old asks his Mother, “Mommy, can I have a keg of dynamite and a flint.” I cautiously ask what he needs these for and he excitedly informs me that he is going to use the flint to light the keg….I mean, he is going to cut some stinging nettles, lime leaf tree shoots and other weeds to make me a smoothie for lunch. My heart sinks. My 5year old is glowing with pride. I open the windows to stop the explosion breaking the glass.
