Table d’Olivier, Samatan, Gers, France

Our wonderful mate, Deirdre, invited us for dinner last month to probably the best restaurant in the Gers. We eat out quite a lot and I can say unreservedly that this restaurant serves superb, quality food, beautifully presented, imaginative and deelicious. I highly recommend it!

I have eaten lunch at Table d’Olivier on several occasions and have always thoroughly enjoyed it. The lunchtime menu (3 courses with a glass of wine) is €16/€17.50 (with cofffee) and well worth the money. The evening meal was €34 for 3 courses and was also money well spent. It was all so beautiful and delicious – sorry if I keep repeating myself, but it was sooooooo good!

There were 3 starters, 3 mains and 2 desserts to choose from. All 8 dishes were tried and, you guessed it, they were all deelicious. There was an English translation which they might need a touch of help with (unless you prefer deserts to desserts that is!), but I am definitely not complaining as it is a great help, so thank you.
hot foie gras
For starters, I had the warm foie gras which I ADORED. My apologies to those who don’t eat foie gras, but for those that do, it was superb to say the very least. It was served with shallot mash and a herb salad (with lovely alfalfa sprouts thrown into mix).

Joerg had the cold foie gras which was served with a filo pastry “cigar” filled with stewed shallots. It was also very tasty and so beautifully presented. The other starter was very elaborate and looked superb – and according to Catherine and Stephen, it was! This starter was composed of Swiss chard ravioli served with a velvety chicken sauce …

For the main course I chose the semi-salted Cod with a poultry sauce, black pudding and “Tatin and Tarbais Bean Salad” that was so good I could have eaten a whole vat of it. The fish was cooked to perfection and I do like a spot of black pud too.

Joerg chose the pigeon and it too was superb. We tried each others meal and I too found the pigeon superb. The squash gratin was a dream and I probably would have enjoyed the samosa, but he ate it all! Husbands!

The third choice was entrecote with chips and a foie gras sauce (we are in the Gers which is the land of duck and foie gras) and it too looked great and apparently tasted so too.

I chose the chocolate dessert and was again not disappointed. The presentation was so “ooh la la” and the taste did not disappoint. The mousse was just right, the tower circle was deevine and so was the crunchy puffed rice biscuit. And the fantastic homemade ice cream - I liked it all. My photo does it no justice at all I’m afraid. Got to learn to work the camera better at some point!

Joerg chose the Pannacota and absolutely loved it. It was served with exotic fruit and meringue macaroons all of which were very good.

The wines were good, the service attentive, informative and very nice. They replaced the water bottles instantaneously – a big plus in my book! All in all a superb meal and a superb evening. Thank you Table d’Olivier, but also thank you Deirdre, Catherine, Stephen, Phillip and Danielle for a lovely evening.
